He also had a Top 40 hit with “Set Me Free Pt.2,” which peaked at Number 30. Jimin’s solo success on the Official Singles Chart further adds to the accomplishments of the BTS members.

In November 2023, another BTS member, Jung Kook, made history on the Official Albums Chart with his solo album “GOLDEN,” debuting at Number 3. This album achieved the highest-charting position ever by a Korean solo artist. Additionally, BTS’s SUGA, known as Min Yoon-gi, secured the group’s first solo Top 10 album in 2020 with “D-2” under his Agust D moniker. The record reached Number 7 on the chart.

As a group, BTS has achieved impressive chart success. They have amassed nine Top 40 singles, including four UK Top 10 hits: “Dynamite” and “Life Goes On” in 2020, and “Butter” and their collaboration with Coldplay titled “My Universe” in 2021. BTS Jin’s Impact on K-pop Overseas Sales

BTS member Jin, also known as Kim Seok-jin, made a significant impact on K-pop’s overseas sales by appearing as a torchbearer at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This appearance led to a substantial rise in K-pop’s popularity in Europe, ultimately boosting overseas sales by KRW 1.23 trillion ($889.12 million). According to reports, foreign K-pop sales increased by KRW 315.9 billion compared to the previous year.

Asia remains the largest market for K-pop, accounting for 60.2% (KRW 156.6 billion) of total overseas streaming sales. However, Europe emerged as a key player in the K-pop market, surpassing Asia with 42.7% of sales. The United States accounted for 33.6% of overseas sales, further highlighting the global appeal of K-pop.

Furthermore, Jin’s upcoming solo debut album is highly anticipated to enhance K-pop’s international sales even further. A report released by the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute revealed that in 2023, K-pop achieved KRW 388.9 billion ($281 million) in overseas album exports. Alongside BTS’s solo projects, albums by other K-pop groups like Stray Kids and LE SSERAFIM contribute to the growing global success and popularity of K-pop.

In terms of revenue, overseas streaming sales totaled KRW 260.3 billion ($188.1 million), while concert performances brought in KRW 599.5 billion ($433.4 million). Sales projections for the future show a 43% annual growth in the U.S. market and a 48% increase in Europe.

BTS’ International Superstardom

BTS, a South Korean group, achieved massive success in their home country with their emotional ballad “Spring Day” in 2017. The song resonated with audiences through its poignant tale of grief and loss. Three years later, BTS showcased a different side of their music with the dance-floor anthem “Dynamite.” This Chic-style disco rush brought a blast of sunshine during the bleak days of the pandemic in the summer of 2020. Both songs exemplify BTS’ international stardom, as they broke beyond the bounds of K-pop to conquer the global music scene.

Both “Spring Day” and “Dynamite” are considered pop classics. Rolling Stone magazine recognized their significance by including both songs in its prestigious list of the 500 Greatest Songs, with “Dynamite” ranking at 347 and “Spring Day” at 280.

On a recent episode of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs, hosts Rob Sheffield and Brittany Spanos discussed the distinct qualities of “Dynamite” and “Spring Day” and how they showcase different aspects of BTS’ music. Journalist Michelle Hyun Kim joined the discussion to delve into the BTS phenomenon, tracing its origins, growth, global reach, and the complementary roles these songs play in the group’s narrative.

“Dynamite” marked BTS’ breakthrough in North America, propelling them to new heights of success after already establishing themselves as a powerhouse in the country. BTS achieved this feat on their own terms, refusing to conform to the expectations of the U.S. music industry. “Dynamite” became their first-ever Number One hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, solidifying their position as international music icons.
